Commentary
A suggestion that the two fragments belong together belongs to Karyshkovsky (1963, 103). Unfortunately, it is impossible to affirm or dispute this suggestion in the absence of Fargment 1, which is probably lost. Since its discovery and until WWII, the fragment was stored at the Odessa Archaeological Museum. At the beginning of 1960s, according to Karyshkovsky (1963, 103), it was already missing, and it is safe to assume it had been lost during the war. Yet considering the similarity of the two stones, of the scripts, and also the fact that both fragments speak of warriors, we may presume that they indeed constituted one inscription.
Judging by the fragments of the text, we are dealing with a decree or a law pertaining to economic or military matters, yet the fragments are not large enough to allow an attempt at restoration or a safe guess about the contents.
Frag. 2, line 3. At the end, we may expect a form of the verb ἀναγιγνώσκω (to read), or of the noun ἀναγνώστης (reader).
