Commentary
For circumstances of discovery, see Dubois de Montpéreux 1843, 314 (see also Karaulov 1872, 70).
On the one hand, an abbreviation theta-epsilon is typical of Early Byzantine period: in Beševliev, 1964, №204 (IV–Vth century) ΘΕ vacat Θεόδωρος (see also V 310). The same abbreviation is found on the capital of a column from "Basilica of 1935" in Chersonesos where it apparently signified the name Theodore or Theodora. On the other hand, the script overall is closer to Middle or Late Byzantine style, while elaborate flourishes at the ends of letter strokes are paralleled only in V 209 (1381-1382 C.E.). The inscription should probably be considered commemorative.
